It's been an eclectic couple of weeks.

I liked it.

Partied with the best (Necromos) at Club Apparition.

Particularly proud to be part of Black Cat Lounge, as I got to spin that I was raised on, and I think my folks would give a nod of approval (mostly). 

Got interviewed by a former teacher for a book she's writing about DJs and club life/pseudo-politics.  AWESOME.

Two weekends at The Box.  Last weekend was weird...it was just a weird night for everyone involved.  Everyone going through their own personal weirdnesses.

Well then.

I mentioned wanting to get more into creativity mode.  It's coming out, but in different mediums than composing.

The piano taunt/haunts me.

Yes, I am intimidated by the instrument.

But eventually, it will pass.  Eventually, I'm going to plug in the power, pull out the chair, and go to town on her.

In the meantime, to sort of even things out, I've been introduced to awesome musicians who I didn't even know were there this whole time, and reintroduced them to others who may be down to create, as well.  So that's paying something forward, isn't it?

The key thing is not being myself into oblivion over everything.  [edit: *beating.  Woah, Freudian.]

(Which is pretty fucking hard, but we'll manage).

Maybe it'll take a pilgrimage to see my dad to help purify the creative waters.  Maybe it'll be some big epiphany--the classic 'Eureka!' moment.  Finding something that was there all along, but needed to be brought to life.

(Also: fuck yeah, I bought tickets right after they went on sale at 10:00 in the morning the day-of presale.  Dedication.  What.)

For now, you should hang out with me and DJ Necromos (who is a person, just like us) at Club Apparition's 4th Year Anniversary in San Jose tomorrow night!  It will be grand.  There may be a pinata...made to look like a certain goth rocker with tousled hair and smudgey lipstick.

I'll also be doing a guest set for the super-hip-slick-cool cats at the Black Cat Lounge in downtown Santa Cruz, at 515 Kitchen and Cocktails, in two weeks on 03/16.  What to expect?  The stuff I was raised on!  Old school 60s garage rock/psychedelia, SURF ROCK!!, some somber girl groups, glam rock, old school/classic punk fucking rock, O.G. goth rock, deathrock, new sleazy grooves...ALL THE GOOD STUFF!

Dig it.

Like a grave.

It'll be fun.

Damn.

I have been kind of busy lately, sorry about that.

Let me 'splain:

I love DJing.  I love spinning for The Box, and the amazing folks I've met through there.  I love dancing at clubs such as our fair one, and Death Guild/Cat Club events up in the city.  I act out, I *perform* while I spin...

But my passion, my drive, is creativity.

I want to create.

I want to create my own music.

Over the past year, I've noticed a lot of my drive has been dedicated to making good sets.  And like I said, I really love DJing for you guys...but things are shifting.  There is a change in the wind.

Performing to others' music isn't authentic, for me.

It's time.

I will still be spinning, but not as prolifically.  I will still be going out to clubs and other events, but not quite as avidly.

I'd like to make some music, guys.  Too many things are pointing me in that direction.

Let me wax poetic for just one second.

I'm the youngest child in my (very diverse) family.  My two oldest brothers are actually a couple decades older than myself; this has been a blessing, musically, because they introduced me to a thoroughly awesome, exponential variety right from the start.

My elder brother would listen to New Order and Joy Division while rocking me to sleep.  This can explain a number of things about my personality.

Anyway, they were lucky enough to grow up in Southern California in the early 80s, when Oingo Boingo were really getting going and would play frequent shows at The Roxy in L.A.

At some point, one of them got this shirt at one of their concerts:

As a little girl, they passed it onto me, and it became my favorite PJ top.

And as that same little girl, my favorite films were all Tim Burton: Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Nightmare Before Christmas.

And as a teenager, I finally got around to listening to the group of the favorite childhood PJ top, and I Got It.  I understood why the older bros would always want to see them.  That voice.  The arrangements.

So I guess you can say, I've had an affinity for Mr. Elfman all my life.

So it was rad to spin some Oingo Boingo this past Sunday, much to the delight of a very receptive (and varied!) crowd.
